Crete is not just the coast. The “true” Crete, as the Cretans themselves say, starts from the hinterland, from the mountains and the most mountainous settlements, where the tradition and culture of the island were forged.

Vamos, Apokoronas – Model of agrotourism: Vamos is a special case: a village with neoclassical color, with unexpectedly many mansions, with countless flowering courtyards, with dozens – without exaggeration – guesthouses that could accommodate two and three times the local population itself.

Aradaina, Sfakia – Other memories: Whatever stone you raise in the villages of Sfakia has to tell you stories of struggles and battles. So with Aradaina, even though its inhabitants were always few: so many battles took place in its gorge, two steps from the village. Today the village is deserted, the result of a bloody feud that began in 1948, although some occasionally return and somehow maintain their homes.

Theriso, Chania – Bastion of struggles: Theriso has gone to history for the timeless struggles of the rebel Cretans against every conqueror. A tragic example in 1905, when militants led by Eleftherios Venizelos placed their headquarters here declaring an armed struggle against George II at the request of the Union.
